La peintre canadienne Pegi Nicol Macleod nait en 1904 à Listowel, Ontario. Elle déménage avec sa famille à l'âge de quatre ans à Ottawa. En 1921, elle étudie la peinture à la toute nouvelle « Art Association of Ottawa », puis étudie à l'École des beaux-arts de Montréal. Encouragé par Marius Barbeau, elle voyage pour peindre les paysages et les peuples autochtones de l'Ouest Canadien. Ses premiers tableaux reflètent l’influence du Groupe des Sept. Puis, elle développe son style expressionniste dynamique. Elle est aussi rédactrice en chef du Forum canadien et, pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, artiste de guerre officielle. À partir des années 1940, elle enseigne chaque année aux côtés de Lucy Jarvis au Observatory Art Centre de l'Université du Nouveau-Brunswick, à Fredericton. Son dernier grand projet, connu sous le nom de Manhattan Cycle, représentait des scènes autour de son appartement de la 88e rue East à New York, où elle résidait parfois avec son mari Norman Macleod au début des années 1940. Elle décède d'un cancer à l'âge de 45 ans.

Canadian painter Pegi Nicol Macleod was born in 1904 in Listowel, Ontario. She moved with her family at the age of four to Ottawa. In 1921, she studied painting at the brand new “Art Association of Ottawa”, then studied at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal. Encouraged by Marius Barbeau, she traveled to paint the landscapes and indigenous peoples of Western Canada. Her early paintings reflect the influence of the Group of Seven. She then developed her dynamic expressionist style. She was also editor-in-chief of the Canadian Forum and, during World War II, an official war artist. Beginning in the 1940s, she taught annually alongside Lucy Jarvis at the Observatory Art Center at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. Her last big project, known as Manhattan Cycle, featured scenes around her apartment on 88th Street East in New York City, where she sometimes resided with her husband Norman Macleod in the early 1940s. She died of cancer. at the age of 45.
