Autodidacte, le peintre québécois Bernard Proulx nait en 1954 à Percé, Gaspésie à l’embouchure du golfe Saint-Laurent. Dans sa famille, les arts sont dominants. À l’âge de 6 ans, Il explore le dessin avec sa mère qui lui apprend les rudiments de ce médium d’expression. Les artistes du Centre d'art de Percé l’inspirent. Il étudie, les grands maîtres canadiens et européens, dans les livres et les musées. Il suit une formation avec Ginette Berthiaume, artiste peintre chevronnée. Plus tard, le peintre Tex Lecor devient son mentor pour la composition et la subtilité des couleurs. La mer, ses embruns, les côtes, les récifs, le chant du ressac, l’odeur du varech et la beauté des côtes gaspésiennes bercent sa jeunesse et imprègnent son imaginaire. La peinture lui permet de définir une plus large palette d'émotions et elle s'ouvre sur une liberté d'expression totale, sans frontière de langage.

Self-taught, Bernard Proulx was born in 1954 in Percé, Gaspésie on the borders of Québec, at the mouth of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In his family, the arts are dominant. At the age of six, he explored drawing with his mother, who taught him the basics of this medium of expression. He is inspired by the artists of the Percé Art Center. He studies the great masters of Quebec, Canada and Europe, as much in books as in museums. He is trained with Ginette Berthiaume, a seasoned painter, to better master the techniques of drawing. Later, the great master Paul Tex Lecor becomes his mentor for composition and the subtlety of colors. The sea, its mist, the coasts, the reefs, the song of the surf, the scent of seaweed and the beauty of the Gaspé coast cradle his youth and permeate his imagination. Painting allows him to define a wider range of emotions and, unlike words, opens up for him a total freedom of expression, without language boundaries.
