Le peintre allemand Hans Holbein-le-jeune, naît en 1497 à Augsbourg. Avec son frère, il est formé à l'atelier paternel. En 1515, il entre dans l'atelier du peintre Hans Herbst. Puis il est en Italie où il s’inspire des œuvres de Léonard de Vinci. Vers 1517, Hans travaille avec son frère Ambrosisu. En 1520, il est à Bâle et peint. En 1524, c’est la France. Puis, Il
gagne l'Angleterre et rencontre Thomas More qui l'introduit auprès des humanistes et de la cour. Il est de retour à Bâle en 1528, Mais la situation économique de la ville se dégrade et en 1532, Hans retourne en Angleterre et obtient de nombreuses commandes.
