VALENTIN DE BOULOGNE
Fils d’un peintre verrier, Jean Valentin est un peintre français de scènes de genre et de tableaux religieux. Baptisé le 3 janvier 1591, son nom vient de Boulogne-sur-Mer. Il part pour l’Italie vers 1614 et fait carrière à Rome où il étudie avec Simon Vouet... et est influencé par Caravage et ses disciples. Réaliste, sans maniérisme et sans naturalisme, son clair-obscur vif améliore la tridimensionnalité et le drame de ses tableaux où les figures, près de la surface de l’image, impliquent le spectateur dans l’action. Le plus brillant à la suite de Caravage et l’égal de Poussin, il reçoit des commandes du pape Urbain VIII. Non marié et sans enfants, il aime surtout les tavernes et banquets orgiaques. Il disparaît après s’être baigné dans les eaux glacées de la fontaine du Triton.
Son of a glass painter, Jean Valentin is a French painter of genre scenes and religious paintings. Baptized on January 3, 1591, his name comes from Boulogne-sur-Mer. He goes to Italy around 1614 and his career is in Rome where he studied with Simon Vouet ... and is influenced by Caravaggio and his followers. Realistic, without mannerism and naturalism, his bright chiaroscuro enhances the three-dimensionality and drama of his paintings where figures, near the surface of the image, involve the viewer in the action. The most brilliant after Caravaggio and the equal of Poussin, he receives orders from Pope Urban VIII. Not married and without children, he especially likes the taverns and orgiastic banquets. He disappears after bathing in the icy waters of the Triton fountain.
