Le peintre et sculpteur français Jean-Léon Gérôme naît à Vesoul en Haute-Saône d'un père orfèvre. Il se rend à Paris en 1841 devient l'élève du peintre Paul Delaroche. En 1842, admis aux Beaux-Arts, il part avec son professeur pour étudier les maîtres italiens. En 1847, il obtient une médaille pour sa toile "Combat de Coqs". Peintre académique, opposé aux impressionnistes, il privilégie les sujets classiques et les scènes historiques ou orientales. En 1862, il mari la fille d'un éditeur d'art et son œuvre connaît une large diffusion. A l'Expo 1878, il expose un groupe, "Gladiateurs", inspiré de son tableau "Pollice verso" et obtient une médaille d'honneur. Il est récompensé d'une médaille de première classe au Salon de 1881. Il meurt en 1904.

The French painter and sculptor Jean-Léon Gérôme was born in Vesoul in Haute-Saône to a father goldsmith. He went to Paris in 1841 and became a pupil of the painter Paul Delaroche. In 1842, admitted to the Fine Arts, he left with his teacher to study the Italian masters. In 1847, he obtained a medal for his painting "Combat de Coqs". Academic painter, opposed to the Impressionists, he favored classical subjects and historical or oriental scenes. In 1862, he married the daughter of an art publisher and his work enjoyed wide circulation. At Expo 1878, he exhibited a group, "Gladiators", inspired by his painting "Pollice verso" and obtained a medal of honor. He was awarded a first class medal at the Salon in 1881. He died in 1904.
