Plus tard, sa famille déménage au Manitoba. Dans son art, il compose avec la dure réalité de la vie sur une ferme pendant l’ère de la Grande Dépression et sonde les sources de son écrasante souffrance mentale. Dès le milieu des années 1960, il a beaucoup de succès sur le marché de l’art canadien. Il meurt en 1977. Ses tableaux constituent une archive non conventionnelle, perturbante et controversée de l’anxiété globale du vingtième siècle. Kurelek, comme nul autre artiste, combine le nostalgique et l’apocalyptique, son œuvre étant une vision simultanée de l’Éden et des Enfers. ----- Canadian painter William Kurelek was born near Whitford, Alberta in 1927, the last of a Ukrainian immigrant family of seven children. His family later moved to Manitoba. In his art, he deals with the harsh reality of life on a farm during the era of the Great Depression and probes the sources of his crushing mental suffering. By the mid-1960s he was very successful in the Canadian art market. He died in 1977. His paintings constitute an unconventional, disturbing and controversial archive of the global anxiety of the twentieth century. Kurelek, like no other artist, combines the nostalgic and the apocalyptic, his work being a simultaneous vision of Eden and the Underworld.
