Le peintre espagnol Juan Gris nait le 23 mars 1887 à Madrid. Il suit des études de dessin industriel à la Escuela de Artes y Manufacturas à Madrid, entre 1902 et en 1904-05 étudie la peinture avec José Maria Carbonero. En 1906, il s'installe à Paris où il devient l’ami de Matisse, Braque, Léger et Picasso dont il fait le portrait. Juan Gris commence à peindre sérieusement en 1910 avec son propre style cubiste et étudie des possibilités de la peinture, à la Sorbonne en 1924. Il expose à Paris, Berlin et Düsseldorf en 1925. La mort le rejoint le 11 mai 1927, à Boulogne-Billancourt, à l'âge de 40 ans. Salvador Dali a dit de lui : « Juan Gris est le plus grand des peintres cubistes, plus important que Picasso ».

The Spanish painter Juan Gris was born on March 23, 1887 in Madrid. He studied industrial design at the Escuela de Artes y Manufacturas in Madrid, between 1902 and in 1904-05 studied painting with José Maria Carbonero. In 1906, he moved to Paris where he became a friend of Matisse, Braque, Léger and Picasso, whom he portrayed. He began to paint in earnest in 1910 with his own cubist style. He studied possibilities of painting, at the Sorbonne in 1924. He exhibited in Paris, Berlin and Düsseldorf in 1925. He died on May 11, 1927, in Boulogne-Billancourt, at the age of 40. Salvador Dali said of him: "Juan Gris is the greatest of Cubist painters, more important than Picasso".
