Le peintre italien de la Renaissance Raphaël naît le 6 avril 1483 à Urbino. Orphelin à 11 ans, il étudie à Pérouse. À 17 ans, il est maître avec un atelier, aides et élèves et réalise en 1504 « Le Mariage de la Vierge ». Il rentre à Florence où la duchesse d'Urbino le recommande. Michel-Ange et Léonard de Vinci sont là et il achève sa formation avec eux durant 4 ans. Appelé à Rome par Jules II en 1508, il rencontre l’amour de sa vie la Fornarina. En 1513, le pape meurt. Léon X, lui confie le chantier de Saint-Pierre. C’est une période d’intense activité, qui, avec la malaria et les crises de fièvre, aura raison de sa santé fragile. Il meurt à Rome le 6 avril 1520 à 37 ans après avoir exécuté « La Transfiguration ». Raphaël repose au Panthéon de Rome.
