Chase, William Merritt

Le peintre impressionniste américain William Merritt Chase naît le 1er novembre 1849 à Williamsburg en Indiana. Élève des peintres Barton S. Hays, Joseph Oriel Eaton, A. Wagner et de Karl von Piloty à Munich, il installe à NY sa propre école « Chase school », après avoir enseigné quelques années à l'Art Students League. Il privilégie, paysages, natures mortes et portraits dont ceux de personnalités souhaitant devenir ses modèles. Membre de la National Academy of Design à NY, il dirige durant 10 ans la Society of American Artists. Membre du Salon des artistes français, il y obtient une mention honorable en 1881. Il remporte aussi une médaille d'argent à Expo1889 et une médaille d'or à Expo1900. Il meurt le 25 octobre 1916.
The American Impressionist painter William Merritt Chase was born on November 1, 1849 in Williamsburg, Indiana. A pupil painters Barton S. Hays, Joseph Oriel Eaton, A. Wagner and Karl von Piloty in Munich, he set up his own school "Chase school" in NY after having taught for several years at the Art Students League. He favors landscapes, still lifes and portraits including those of personalities wishing to become his models. Member of the National Academy of Design in NY, he directed for 10 years the Society of American Artists. Member of the Salon des artistes français, he received an honorable mention in 1881. He also won a silver medal at Expo1889 and a gold medal at Expo1900. He died on October 25, 1916.
