ANGUISSOLA, SOFONISBA

La peintre italienne Sofonisba Anguissola nait en 1532 à Crémone. Connue pour ses portraits, elle est l'une des premières artistes féminines connues à se faire une réputation internationale. L'aînée de sept enfants, en 1546, Sofonisba et Elena, sa sœur, sont envoyées en pension dans la maison d'un éminent peintre local. Elle reçoit les encouragements de Michel-Ange. En 1559, elle est invitée à Madrid, à la cour de Philippe II et est la servante de l'infante Isabelle Clara Eugenia. Vers 1571, elle épouse un Sicilien et devient veuve vers 1579. La même année, elle rencontre le capitaine Orazio Lomellino, et l’épouse. Influencée par le peintre génois Luca Cambia-so. Son travail est souvent attribué à des peintres masculins de l'époque. Le 12 juillet 1624, elle reçoit la visite du jeune peintre flamand Anthony van Dyck. Elle meurt en novembre 1625 à Palerme.

The Italian painter Sofonisba Anguissola was born in 1532 in Cremona. Known for her portraits, she is one of the first known female artists to gain an international reputation. The eldest of seven children, in 1546, Sofonisba and Elena, her sister, were boarded in the house of an eminent local painter. She receives encouragement from Michelangelo. In 1559, she was invited to Madrid, to the court of Philip II and was the servant of the Infanta Isabelle Clara Eugenia. Around 1571, she married a Sicilian and became a widow around 1579. The same year, she met Captain Orazio Lomellino, and married him. Influenced by the Genoese painter Luca Cambiaso. Her work is often attributed to male painters of the time. On July 12, 1624, she received a visit from the young Flemish painter Anthony van Dyck. She died in November 1625 in Palermo.
