Le peintre vénitien Giovanni Antonio Canal dit Canaletto, naît à Venise le 28 octobre 1697. Peintre paysagiste du 18e siècle, imprimeur, graveur, il réalise des œuvres à Venise et en Angleterre. Apprenti auprès de son père Benedetto, il peint des paysages dont le « Cortile dello scalpellino ». Après 1720, il produit des travaux de détails et d'un style topographique. Il peint des vues panoramiques et tridimensionnelles des canaux vénitiens et du Palais Ducal. Ses œuvres sont recherchées par les collectionneurs. Il peint aussi des fêtes historiques et des manifestations populaires. Canaletto se déplaçe en Angleterre 1746 à 1755 et connaît un bon succès. Il rentre à Venise et est invité à l'Académie en 1763. Il y travaille jusqu'à sa mort le 19 avril 1768.

The Venetian painter Giovanni Antonio Canal known as Canaletto was born in Venice on October 28, 1697. Landscape painter of the 18th century, printer, engraver, he produced works in Venice and in England. Apprentice to his father Benedetto, he painted landscapes including the "Cortile dello scalpellino". After 1720, he produced work in detail and in a topographic style. He painted panoramic and three-dimensional views of the Venetian canals and the Ducal Palace. His works are sought after by collectors. He also painted historical festivals and popular events. Canaletto moved to England from 1746 to 1755 and enjoyed great success. He returned to Venice and was invited to the Academy in 1763. He worked there until his death on April 19, 1768.
