Le peintre italien Renato Guttoso naît le 26 décembre 1911 à Bagheria, près de Palerme. Jeune, il rejoint le Parti communiste italien, quitte Rome pour participer activement à la lutte partisane à partir de 1943 tout en s’opposant à la mafia. En 1972, Guttuso reçoit le prix Lénine pour la paix. En 1976, il est élu au Sénat PCI italien, pour le comté sicilien de Sciacca. Plus tard, Guttoso est antifasciste et athée. Grand peintre, il conçoit pour le théâtre les décors et costumes pour l'Histoire du Soldat à Rome et réalise des illustrations dont celles du livre de cuisine italienne d’Elizabeth David. Il s'est inspiré de l'expressionnisme et de la lumière crue de sa terre natale pour peindre des paysages. Guttoso meurt le 18 janvier 1987

The Italian painter Renato Guttoso was born on December 26, 1911 in Bagheria, near Palermo. Young, he joined the Italian Communist Party and left Rome to participate actively in the partisan struggle from 1943 while opposing the Mafia. In 1972, Guttuso received the Lenin Peace Prize. In 1976, he was elected to the Italian PCI Senate, for the Sicilian county of Sciacca. Later, Guttoso is anti-fascist and atheist. A great painter, he designed the sets and costumes for the History of the Soldier in Rome for the theater and produced illustrations including that of Elizabeth David's Italian cookbook. He was inspired by expressionism and the harsh light of his native land to paint landscapes. Guttoso died on January 18, 1987
